Islands Of Angola

If you think diamonds and oil can bring wealth to a country, think again. The second largest producer of both in Africa, its people are one of the poorest in the continent. Angola gained independence from Portugal in 1975 and has been embroiled in civil strife ever since.

Angola is divided into eighteen provinces, 163 municipalities and 2 islands. Following are the islands:

  1. Kwanda
  2. Mussulo

Kwanda island is located near the mouth of the Congo river. It is host to the Kwanda Base, which supports the various oil and gas companies. These companies include Texaco,BP,Halliburton among others.

Academica Petroleo de Kwanda take their name from the island, although they are based in Soyo on the mainland near the islands.Until 2007, they were playing in the Girabola, Angolan Premier Division. In 2008, they immediately bounced back to gain promotion back with some impressive performances. They were founded in 1987, making them one of the youngest teams in the top tier.Estadio Imbomdeiro is their home ground with a capacity of 10,000, located in Soyo.

Mussulo Island is located only a few kilometers from the capital, Luanda. It is situated in the Kwanza river and is a popular destination for tourists. It also houses weekend houses and a tourist complex. There are no football grounds on Mussulo, only a water sports complex. But football being the peoples game here in Angola, there is every chance that people play the game in some informal form.
